Getting Rid Of Fleas In Your Home
If your pet is scratching, or you can see tiny dark specks in its fur, see small browny-black insects scurrying about, or if you have any unaccounted flea bites yourself, it most probably means, you need a safe and effective flea treatment carried out.
In order to get rid of fleas, to control a cat flea infestation, or a dog flea infestation, the host animal and home must be treated. The affected pet, can be treated by a vet, while the dwelling property can be treated with a spray insecticide.
The use of these flea control chemicals, is best left to a trained professional to maximise effectiveness.
Fleas are not the most severe of pests but are highly unpleasant to those in contact with them, causing bites and irritation to the skin.
Fleas live in the fur of your pet(s) and also in many places throughout the rooms of your house.
We frequently attend flea infestations where the occupiers have spent more on DIY treatments than if they would have if they had called us out at the beginning of their cat flea or dog flea infestation.
Cat fleas and dog fleas are different species, though, despite their name, cat fleas are capable of affecting dogs and humans.
About Fleas
Fleas may infest and breed in your home, and are a general nuisance. They tend to be problematic during September with their largest annual numbers, especially in areas of high population. In London fleas are not generally found to spread infections, but do inflict an unpleasant and irritating bite on their hosts.
- Adult Fleas are about 2-7mm long and brownish in colour.
- Fleas do not have wings but they do have very powerful legs and can jump large distances.
- Female fleas can live up to 2 years and can lay 25 eggs a day. Their bodies are compressed which allows them to move efficiently through hairs, and their relatively large hind limbs allow them to have excellent jumping qualities.
Adult fleas live exclusively as parasites on warm-blooded animals such as cats, dogs and humans. The eggs are slightly sticky and are laid on hair, bedding or clothing of the host.
Carpets provide a relatively undisturbed environment for fleas to breed; they can also live in cracks and crevices of bare floors. Adults feed on the blood of the host animal (cat, dog, human). The larvae feed on the droppings of the adults.
Fleas are in most cases brought into your home by pets, but if you are also unlucky enough to have a rat or mice infestation, they too, are a major carrier of fleas into the home.
It is thought that every cat and dog will suffer a flea infestation at some point in their lives, so it is important that they are regularly checked by a veterinary surgeon, to lessen the chance, of fleas in your home.
For every flea you can see on your cat or dog, there may be 150-200 flea eggs close by, so a thorough professional flea treatment is a must.
Flea Bites
Flea bites result in red spots surrounded by reddened haloes, that are extremely itchy and can cause great discomfort in humans or household pets.
Before you begin any flea treatment of your pets flea bites, whether it is a cat flea infestation or a dog flea infestation, we strongly advise that you consult a Veterinarian.
If you are a victim of a flea bite, wash the flea bite, and then use an antiseptic cream, and apply an icepack, and resist the urge to scratch.
Treating flea bites merely addresses one symptom of a flea infestation. Flea extermination methods should be conducted in conjunction with flea bite treatment in order to ensure total flea kill and eradication.
Getting rid of fleas is a job we specialise in – whether it’s cat fleas, dog fleas, or any other kind of flea. Why not get in touch?
